This is the most common method and the one I recommend for most use cases. The video is hosted on YouTube or Vimeo, your Squarespace site simply displays it.
How to Add a Video Block
Open the page editor. Click an insert point where you want the video. Add a Video Block. Paste the YouTube or Vimeo URL. The video player appears immediately. Click Save.
Why Host on YouTube or Vimeo Instead of Squarespace?
External hosting has significant advantages. YouTube and Vimeo handle video compression, adaptive streaming, and CDN delivery, your site loads the player, not the full video file. This keeps your pages fast. YouTube videos also appear in YouTube search results, giving you an additional traffic source. Vimeo offers cleaner, ad-free playback and more privacy controls.
Video Block Settings
After adding a Video Block, click the settings icon to configure thumbnail image (custom or auto-generated), whether the video autoplays, loop behavior, and design spacing. Use a custom thumbnail for better visual impact, auto-generated thumbnails are often unflattering freeze frames.
Method 2: Background Video on Sections
Add a video that plays silently behind your section content, creating an immersive, dynamic background instead of a static image.
How to Add a Background Video
On 7.1, click Edit on a page section. In the section settings, look for the Background option. Select Video. Upload an MP4 file or paste a YouTube/Vimeo URL. The video plays on loop, muted, behind your section content.
Best Practices for Background Videos
Keep background videos short (10-30 seconds) and seamless for smooth looping. Use subtle, low-motion content, busy videos distract from the text overlay. Compress video files heavily, background videos should be under 10 MB for fast loading. Always include a fallback background image for mobile devices, as some mobile browsers do not autoplay video. Method 3: Native Video Upload
Squarespace allows direct video file uploads for certain use cases.
How It Works
Upload MP4 files directly to Squarespace through the Video Block or media uploader. The maximum file size is 500 MB for most plans. Squarespace handles playback, no external hosting needed.
When to Use Native Upload
Use native uploads when you do not want your video on YouTube or Vimeo, when privacy is important (no public listing on video platforms), or for short clips like product demos or animations that do not need a YouTube presence. For videos from platforms other than YouTube or Vimeo, or for custom video players, use an Embed Block.
Add an Embed Block to your page. Paste the embed code (usually an iframe) provided by the video platform. The video player renders on your page. This method works with Wistia, Loom, Dailymotion, and any platform that provides an HTML embed code.

Video Performance Considerations
Embedded videos (YouTube/Vimeo) have minimal impact on page speed because the video loads from the external platform's servers, not yours. The page loads a lightweight player shell first, the video data streams only when the viewer clicks play.
Native uploads and background videos directly affect loading speed. Large video files slow your page. Compress videos before uploading, use HandBrake (free) to reduce file size. Troubleshooting Squarespace Video Problems
Video Not Showing After Embedding
If a Video Block shows a blank space instead of the player, check that the URL is a standard YouTube or Vimeo watch URL, not a playlist URL or shortened link. YouTube Shorts URLs do not work in Video Blocks, use the full watch URL instead. Private or unlisted videos require viewer permissions and may not display for all visitors.
Background Video Not Playing
Background videos do not play on most mobile devices, this is a browser-level restriction across iOS and many Android devices, not a Squarespace limitation. Always set a static background image as a fallback. On desktop, if a background video does not play, check the file format (MP4 required), file size (over 30 MB can cause timeout failures), and that the video codec is H.264.
Video Loading Slowly
Slow video loading almost always means the video file is too large. Use HandBrake (free) to compress MP4 files before uploading. Target: under 10 MB for background videos, under 100 MB for native uploads. For embedded YouTube or Vimeo videos, slow loading means the viewer's connection is slow, not your site, embedded videos load from the platform's CDN, not your server.
Video Autoplay Not Working
Browser autoplay policies block video with audio. Muted autoplay is broadly supported. If your autoplay is not triggering, confirm the video is set to mute in the Video Block settings. Background videos autoplay muted by default and are unaffected by this restriction. If you need unmuted autoplay (unusual), the only reliable approach is user-triggered play via a visible play button.
